“A cheerful look brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones.” Proverbs 15:30
“Wear a smile and have friends; wear a scowl and have wrinkles. What do we live for if not to make the whole world less difficult for each other?” George Elliot said.
Our one year old baby student, Yu Ri, loves to smile. She smiles at every face he sees–young or old, pimply or hairy, smooth or wrinkled. When she recently met an old church member, I was afraid she’d react fearfully to that dear, deeply wrinkled face, but she simply beamed, hugged and kissed her! I believe that this response comes from the knowledge that she is loved; the security of the love gives her the ability to respond with love and trust to everyone she meets.
I suddenly remembered a friend of mine who recently told me, “Promise, I like it when you smile and when you greet people because you have a beautiful smile that is real and not fake. You always smile to the people you see. That is the reason why you can easily have friends.”
I was surprised by what she said but I replied, “Oh, really? Thank you!”
A smile is a simple thing, but it can make a big difference in someone’s day. It can make anger or resentment disappear, dissolve tension, show someone you care, or inspire laughter. One smile can turn an enemy into a friend, a despairing person into a hopeful one, or a frustrated person into a cheerful one. And it doesn’t only work on others–wearing your smile can change your own outlook as well.
Mother Theresa once said, “Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.” Isn’t that a lovely thought? Every day provides us with many opportunities to give away this precious and inexpensive gift, yet how often we it neglect too!
We have a heavenly Parent who loves us more than we can fathom–enough to sacrifice His only Son so that we can spend eternity with Him. What better reason could we have that would make us radiate His bundles of love to others with a smile?
Today, think of His love for you and let the joy of that knowledge well up in your heart until it bursts out all over your face–smile!
“Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul? Why are crying in the blues? Fix my eyes on God – soon I’ll be praising again. He puts a smile on my face. He’s my God.” (Ps. 42:5, Message)
